Clean Monday (or "Clean Monday") is an important religious and cultural holiday celebrated in the Orthodox Church. It marks the beginning of Lent, which lasts 40 days before Easter.

History and Meaning
Clean Monday has its roots in the Christian tradition and is associated with preparation for Lent, a period of repentance and abstinence. The holiday also symbolizes cleansing from sins and material attachments, which is reflected in its name. On this day, believers are called to begin the fast by cleansing the spirit and body.

Traditions and Customs
Meatless Meal. On Clean Monday, a festive meal without meat is traditionally held. Instead, dishes made from fish, vegetables, and legumes are served. Olives, hummus, salads, and fruits are often found on the table.

Picnics. Many families celebrate this day in nature, having picnics in parks or on the beach. This is a time for relaxation and communication with loved ones.

Cardboard masks and games. In some regions of Greece, it is customary to wear masks and participate in folk games, which adds a cheerful mood to the holiday.

Liturgy. Some believers attend church services on this day to receive a blessing and begin the fast with spiritual cleansing.
