NATO Foundation Day, celebrated on April 4th, is an important date for the North Atlantic Alliance, established to ensure the collective security of member countries and promote peace in international politics.

History of NATO's Creation
NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was founded on April 4, 1949. The formation of the organization was a response to growing tensions in post-war Europe and the threat of the Soviet Union. On this day, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed, forming the foundation for the union of 12 countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and Denmark.

Goals and Missions of NATO
The main goal of NATO is to protect the territorial integrity and independence of its member countries. The treaty states that an attack on one member country will be considered an attack on all countries. This is the fundamental principle of collective security, known as Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Additionally, NATO plays an important role in supporting peace initiatives, humanitarian missions, and combating threats such as terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

NATO Expansion
Since its founding, NATO has expanded significantly. Initially, in 1952, Turkey and Greece joined the organization, and after the end of the Cold War, the alliance openly accepted several countries from Central and Eastern Europe, such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and others. Today, NATO has 30 member countries, making it the largest military and political organization in the world.

Importance of NATO Foundation Day
NATO Foundation Day is celebrated not only in member countries but also in countries that maintain relations with the alliance. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of collective security and peacekeeping activities. In some countries, ceremonies, exhibitions, lectures, and other events are held to honor the history of NATO and its role in promoting peace and stability.

This day is important for strengthening the sense of unity and solidarity among member countries and raising awareness of their shared responsibility for global security.
