Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Homeland War and Remembrance Day for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja
November 18, Tuesday

Historical Background
On November 18, 1991, after a prolonged siege lasting 87 days, the city of Vukovar fell to the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and Serbian paramilitary forces. The fall of Vukovar marked one of the most devastating episodes of the war, resulting in widespread destruction and the deaths of hundreds of defenders and civilians. In the aftermath, numerous war crimes were committed, including the Vukovar massacre at the Ovčara farm, where over 260 wounded individuals and prisoners of war were executed.
On the same day, in the village of Škabrnja near Zadar, Serbian forces launched an attack that led to the massacre of 84 Croatian civilians and defenders. The victims included women, children, and the elderly, many of whom were killed in their homes or executed after being captured. The events in Škabrnja are remembered as one of the most brutal atrocities committed during the conflict.
Commemorative Events
Each year, the Croatian government, veterans' associations, and citizens organize a series of commemorative events to mark the day:
- A memorial procession known as the "Column of Remembrance" takes place in Vukovar, where thousands of people walk from the Vukovar hospital to the Memorial Cemetery of the Homeland War Victims.
- In Škabrnja, a similar procession is held, followed by a memorial service and the laying of wreaths at the local cemetery.
- Religious services, candle lighting, and moments of silence are observed throughout the country.
- Schools and public institutions often hold educational programs to teach younger generations about the significance of the day.
National Significance
Remembrance Day is a public holiday in Croatia, and it is marked by the closure of schools, government offices, and many businesses. It is a day of national mourning and unity, reflecting the collective memory of the Croatian people and their resilience in the face of adversity. The holiday underscores the importance of peace, freedom, and the enduring impact of war on a nation's identity.
By commemorating the victims of Vukovar, Škabrnja, and the broader Homeland War, Croatia reaffirms its commitment to honoring the past while striving for a peaceful future.
