Necktie Day
October 18, Saturday

History of the holiday
The origins of the holiday are connected with the history of Croatian mercenaries of the 17th century who wore a piece of cloth tied around the neck — the predecessor of the modern tie. This element of the uniform was a sign of military belonging and neatness. The French called this accessory “cravate” — from the word “Croate” (Croatian), and the fashion for it quickly spread throughout Europe.
Later, the tie became an integral part of the male wardrobe and, over time, also of the female one.
When and where it is celebrated
Tie Day is especially popular in Croatia — the homeland of this accessory. In 2008, UNESCO recognized the tie as part of Croatia’s cultural heritage.
In Zagreb and other Croatian cities, on October 18, festive events, exhibitions, parades, and flash mobs dedicated to the tie are held. People wear the most unusual or elegant models and share photos on social networks.
How the holiday is celebrated
In different countries, Tie Day is celebrated in various ways:
* fashion shows and contests for the most original or elegant tie are organized;
* master classes on tying different knots are held;
* themed parties are arranged in offices and schools;
* gifts such as ties, cufflinks, or tie clips are given to friends and colleagues;
