The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Dictatorships is observed every year on February 25 in Hungary. The purpose of this day is to pay respect to all those who were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, or killed by communist regimes, and to remind people of the inhumanity of dictatorship and the importance of freedom.

Origin of the Day of Remembrance
In 2000, the National Assembly declared February 25 as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Dictatorships. The date is symbolically significant: on February 25, 1947, Béla Kovács, Secretary General of the Independent Smallholders' Party, was arrested by the Soviet authorities and deported to the Soviet Union. This event was an important milestone in the communist takeover in Hungary and exemplifies the methods of the communist dictatorship.

Purpose and Message of the Day of Remembrance
The purpose of the day is to ensure that society does not forget the crimes committed by communist dictatorships and that younger generations learn about this dark period of history. Remembering helps prevent history from repeating itself and contributes to strengthening democratic values.

Commemorations and Programs
On the occasion of the day, various events are held nationwide:

* Wreath-laying ceremonies at memorials, for example at the House of Terror Museum in Budapest
* School commemorations, special history lessons
* Exhibitions, screenings of documentaries
* Scientific conferences and lectures on the history of communist dictatorships
* Testimonies from survivors and historians

International Aspects
Although February 25 is a Hungarian initiative, similar commemorations for the victims of communist regimes are held in several other countries. In 2009, the European Parliament adopted a resolution designating August 23 – the anniversary of the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact – as the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes. This also shows that the legacy of communist dictatorships is an important issue not only nationally but also at the European level.

Summary
The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Dictatorships is an important occasion to remember those who lost their lives or freedom due to communist oppression. The day not only serves to process the past but also sends a message to future generations: preserving freedom, human rights, and democracy is our shared responsibility.
