The Memorial Day of Holocaust Victims in Hungary(Memorial Day of Holocaust Victims in Hungary) is held every year on April 16, in memory of the day in 1944 when the ghettoization of Hungarian Jews began following the Nazi occupation. The purpose of the day is to remember more than half a million Hungarian Jewish victims who were deported, killed, or otherwise persecuted during World War II because of their origin.

Historical Background
On March 19, 1944, Germany occupied Hungary. Following the German occupation, with the active collaboration of Hungarian authorities, the Jewish population was rapidly stripped of rights, confined to ghettos, and then deported. On April 16, the ghettoization began in the Transcarpathian territories and soon spread across the entire country. Deportations began in May, and within barely two months, approximately 437,000 Jews were transported, most to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Introduction of the Memorial Day
In 2000, the Hungarian National Assembly declared April 16 as the Memorial Day of Holocaust Victims in Hungary. The purpose of the day is for all members of society—especially younger generations—to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust and to understand the lessons of these tragic events.

Commemorations and Programs
Various events are held across the country on this day:

* School commemorations, where teachers and students together recall the events.
* Exhibitions, screenings of documentaries, and recollections of survivors.
* Wreath-laying ceremonies at memorial sites, such as the Shoes on the Danube Bank in Budapest or the Holocaust Memorial Center.
* Religious ceremonies and community events organized by Jewish congregations.

Educational Role
The memorial day plays an important role in Holocaust education. Schools dedicate special lessons to the history of the Holocaust, human rights, the dangers of prejudice, and social responsibility. The aim is for young people to understand where hatred, exclusion, and indifference can lead.

International Significance
Although April 16 is specifically the memorial day for Hungarian victims, Holocaust remembrance is of international significance. In 2005, the UN designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, but Hungary also emphasizes its historical responsibility and preserving the memory of its victims.

The Memorial Day of Holocaust Victims in Hungary not only recalls past tragedies but also serves as a warning that hatred and intolerance must never be repeated.
