The International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing is observed annually on June 5. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017.

Purpose of the day
The main goal is to draw attention to the destructive consequences of illegal fishing for:

* marine ecosystems
* food security
* the economies of countries, especially developing ones

What is illegal and unregulated fishing?
It includes:

* fishing without a permit
* violation of rules (for example, exceeding quotas)
* fishing in closed or restricted areas
* lack of reporting on caught fish
* activities of vessels flying "flags of convenience" and not complying with international norms

Why is it important?
Illegal fishing:

* depletes fish populations
* harms honest fishermen
* threatens sustainable fishing
* hinders the management of marine resources

How is the day observed?
On this day:

* educational events are held
* reports and statistics are published
* actions by governments and international organizations are intensified
* information is shared in the media and social networks

Interesting fact
