National Santri Day is celebrated in Indonesia every year on October 22.

History of the holiday
The holiday was established in 2015 by a decree of Indonesian President Joko Widodo. The date was chosen in memory of the religious call (Resolusi Jihad) issued on October 22, 1945, by the famous Islamic scholar and leader of the Nahdlatul Ulama movement, Hasyim Asy’ari. This call inspired Muslim students and religious figures — santri — to fight for Indonesia’s independence against colonial forces.

Who are the santri
Santri are students of Islamic religious schools (pesantren), where they study the Quran, Islamic jurisprudence, ethics, and the Arabic language. They play an important role in Indonesia’s religious and cultural life, helping preserve spiritual traditions and national values.

Meaning of the holiday
National Santri Day aims to honor the role of religious students and clergy in the struggle for the country’s independence, as well as to emphasize the importance of religious education and moral development in modern society.
