Ratha Saptami is an important Hindu festival that is celebrated on the seventh day of the waxing moon (Shukla Phat) in the month of Maagha (usually in January-February). The day is dedicated to the Sun God Surya and symbolizes his triumphant march across the sky in his divine chariot (ratha), which is pulled by seven horses.

Symbolism and Meaning
Ratha is a chariot that symbolizes the movement of the Sun across the sky. The day is associated with the turning of time, when the days become longer, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and the beginning of a new season.

Surya is the deity responsible for light and life force. On Ratha Saptami, Surya is depicted on his chariot pulled by seven horses, which symbolize the seven colors of the spectrum or the seven chakras of the human body.

Saptami means the seventh day, and the festival occurs on the seventh day after the new moon, which is considered an important period for the beginning of a new life and renewal.

Rituals and Traditions
Surya Namaskar. An important part of the festival is the performance of surya namaskar (Sun Salutation), a special set of yogic exercises that honor the Sun as a source of energy and strength.

Bathing. Devotees begin the day with a ritual bath, often in rivers or sacred ponds. In India, bathing on Ratha Saptami is believed to bring cleansing from sins and the blessings of Surya.

Offerings and Prayers. On this day, devotees make offerings to the Sun God, such as flowers, fruits, and other objects symbolizing light and energy. Special prayers and rituals are also held, especially in temples dedicated to Surya.

Surya Temples. Important celebrations take place at temples such as the Sun Temple at Konark and other Sun worship places in India.
