Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu and Jain calendars. The festival usually falls on the third day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha (April-May in the Gregorian calendar). It is a day that symbolizes eternal prosperity, good fortune and the beginning of new endeavors.Meaning of the name
"Akshaya" means "eternal" or "inexhaustible", indicating the inexhaustible nature of blessings, wealth and happiness. "Tritya" is the third day of the lunar cycle.
Historical and mythological aspects
Hindu tradition. On this day, Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Parashurama appeared on earth. It is believed that on Akshaya Tritiya, the writing of the Mahabharata began by the legendary sage Vyasa in collaboration with Ganesha. Goddess Lakshmi, the patroness of wealth, blesses her devotees on this day. This day is associated with the divine food source, Akshaya Patra, a magical vessel that provided endless food for the Pandavas.
Jainism. For Jains, this is an important day, marking the end of a year of strict fasting by the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanath. He broke his fast by drinking sugarcane juice, making this day especially revered in the Jain community.
Traditions and Customs
Buying gold and valuables. Buying gold, silver or other property on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring eternal prosperity and happiness to the home. Many people start new projects or make large investments on this day.
Charity. Charitable acts such as distributing food, water, clothes or money are considered especially auspicious. People try to help the poor, feed the hungry and perform other good deeds.
Prayers and Rituals. Visiting temples and making offerings to the gods, especially Vishnu and Lakshmi, is an important part of the celebration.
Some Hindus perform special rituals and yajnas (fire offerings) to attract blessings.
Weddings. In India, Akshaya Tritiya is considered such an auspicious day that it is called the "wedding season" because all marriages that take place on this day are considered fortunate and harmonious.
Agricultural rituals. In some regions, farmers begin planting new crops, believing that this will bring a bountiful harvest.
