On September 17, 1948, Hyderabad, a former independent princely state, was annexed by India after the Polo Operation. As a result, the territory of Hyderabad was divided among three states: Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, the anniversary of this event is officially observed as Marathwada Liberation Day.
