National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence is observed in Iraq every year on March 6. The day was established in 2021 to commemorate Pope Francis’ historic visit to Iraq, during which he called for peace, unity, and interfaith cooperation. Pope Francis visited several cities, including Baghdad, Ur, Mosul, and Erbil, and met with religious leaders, including Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, one of Iraq’s most influential Shiite leaders.How is National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence Celebrated
Events to Strengthen Unity. On this day, gatherings and events are held in different cities across Iraq to strengthen ties between different communities – Shiites, Sunnis, Christians, Yazidis, Kurds, and others.
Prayers for Peace. Religious leaders hold communal prayers and services, calling for peace and tolerance among all religions and peoples of the country.
Educational and cultural events. Schools and universities organize lectures and discussions on tolerance, coexistence and peace. Cultural exhibitions and events are also held to showcase the diversity of Iraqi culture.
Meetings with community leaders. Iraqi government and community leaders call on citizens to unite and work together to improve society, regardless of religious or ethnic background.
