International Mountain Day
December 11, Wednesday
International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on December 11 and was established by the United Nations in 2003. This day is intended to draw attention to the importance of mountain regions for the planet's ecosystem, their significance for humanity and the need to protect them. Mountains occupy about 27% of the land surface and are home to 15% of the world's population, playing a key role in maintaining natural and cultural diversity.Goals and objectives of International Mountain Day
Drawing attention to the problems of mountain regions. Mountains are important sources of fresh water, energy, biological diversity, but they face serious threats due to climate change, environmental degradation, soil erosion and the extinction of unique species.
Recognizing the importance of mountain ecosystems. Mountain areas support millions of people, providing them with food, forest resources, medicinal plants and other materials necessary for life. Mountains also play an important role in climate regulation.
Supporting the development of mountain communities. Despite their natural resources, many mountain communities live in poverty and inequality. This day aims to support sustainable development and help mountain regions overcome social and economic difficulties.
Promoting environmental sustainability. Preserving mountain ecosystems and their resources requires efforts to reduce human impact, protect nature, reduce deforestation and develop sustainable land use practices.
Themes and events
Each year, International Mountain Day is dedicated to a specific theme that reflects current challenges for mountain regions. Examples of themes from previous years: "Mountains: the key to a sustainable future", "Mountains and climate change", "Cultural heritage of mountains".
Various events are held as part of the holiday:
Conferences and seminars. Discussing issues of sustainable development of mountain regions, environmental measures and preservation of cultural heritage.
Educational campaigns. Raising public awareness of the importance of mountains for the ecosystem and their vulnerability.
Environmental actions. Activities to protect mountain ecosystems, plant trees, restore forests and clean up natural areas.
