National Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe
February 10, Saturday
National Day of Remembrance of the Exiles and Victims of Foibe is observed annually in Italy on 10 February. The day commemorates the Italians who were victims of the massacres known as the Foibe tragedy and the deportations that occurred at the end of World War II and in the immediate post-war years. During this period, many Italians living in the region of Istria, Fiume (present-day Rijeka, Croatia) and Dalmatia were subjected to repression by Yugoslav partisan forces and forced to flee their homes.historical context
After the end of World War II, Yugoslavia laid claim to territories that had previously belonged to Italy, such as Istria and Dalmatia. In the process of ethnic cleansing, many Italians were violently killed and buried in natural karst caves known as foibe, which is where the tragedy gets its name. Hundreds of people were thrown into these limestone craters, and tens of thousands became refugees, driven from their homes.
