The Anniversary of the Unification of Italy is a national holiday that falls annually on 17 March and celebrates the birth of Italy as a modern nation-state, which occurred with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861.

The Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, also known as Italy Day or National Unity Day (Giornata dell'Unità Nazionale), is celebrated on 17 March. The day has a special significance for Italy as it symbolises the end of the process of unification of the country, which lasted for several decades.

History
The process of Italian unification, known as the Risorgimento, took place in the 19th century and was the result of political and military efforts to unite the many small states and kingdoms that existed on the Italian peninsula.

The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed on 17 March 1861. It was the result of a long effort by revolutionaries such as Giuseppe Macini, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II, who became the first king of a unified Italy. The most important events in this process were: the war of independence (first and second stages), support for France and the fight against Austria.

However, the process of complete unification was completed only in 1870, when Rome was incorporated into the new kingdom.

Holiday traditions
