International Day of the Seafarer
June 25, Wednesday

History and Establishment of the Day
The decision to create the International Day of the Seafarer was made in June 2010 at the Manila conference, as part of the revision of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
The first observance took place in 2011, and since then, 25 June has been marked globally every year.
Why 25 June?
This date was chosen in honor of the June 2010 conference, where a key IMO resolution was adopted to lay the foundation for the day. 25 June symbolizes recognition of the importance and ongoing efforts of seafarers.
Why Celebrate This Day
1. Recognition of the role of seafarers — about 90% of global trade is conducted by sea and handled by seafarers.
2. Raising awareness of maritime profession issues — safety, health, rights, working conditions.
3. A call for fair treatment — governments and companies are urged to ensure proper support for seafarers.
How the International Day of the Seafarer Is Celebrated
1. Thank-you messages are published for seafarers and the maritime industry with hashtags #DayOfTheSeafarer or #InternationalDayoftheSeafarer.
2. Educational and cultural events are organized — round tables, lectures, and exhibitions in port cities.
3. Shipping companies and organizations enhance efforts to protect seafarers’ rights, safety, and well-being.
4. Donations can be made to maritime charities and associations such as Mission to Seafarers, ISWAN, and others.
What This Means for the World
The International Day of the Seafarer strengthens global trade, highlights the value of seafarers’ work, and promotes better working conditions. It helps create a safer, more respectful, and fair maritime environment.
Conclusion
The International Day of the Seafarer is more than just the date of 25 June. It is international recognition of the seafarers’ mission, their daily feats, and their pursuit of better conditions at sea.
