International Migrants Day is celebrated on December 18 and is dedicated to recognizing the contribution of migrants to societies around the world, as well as issues related to migration, the rights of migrants and their protection. This day was established in 2000 by the UN General Assembly in recognition of the growing importance of migration and the need to ensure the rights of people moving in search of better living and working conditions.

History
The date of December 18 was not chosen by chance: on this day in 1990, the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The Convention is aimed at protecting the rights of migrants, regardless of their status, and ensuring fair treatment in host countries.

Problems and challenges of migrants
Migrants often face a number of serious problems, including:

Economic difficulties. Many migrants have difficulty finding work, receiving fair wages and social guarantees.
Discrimination and xenophobia. Migrants often face prejudice, stereotypes and even violence based on racial, ethnic or cultural hatred.
Legal problems. Insecurity of status and limited access to legal assistance complicate the situation of migrants, especially if they have no legal status.
Lack of access to basic services. In many countries, migrants face restrictions in accessing health care, education and housing.

The purpose of International Migrants Day is to draw attention to these issues and to promote respectful and humane treatment of migrants. The UN and other international organizations use the day to raise awareness of the important contribution of migrants to the economy, culture and development of the countries that host them.
