Coming of Age Day
January 8, Monday
Coming of Age Day is a traditional Japanese holiday celebrated on the second Monday in January. The day is dedicated to young people who have reached the age of majority (20 years) during the past year, and symbolizes their transition to adulthood with the rights and responsibilities that come with that status.History of the holiday
Ancient roots. The rite of passage into adulthood has existed in Japan since ancient times. It was originally called gempuku and was held for young men from samurai families when they turned 15.
Official establishment of the holiday. Coming of Age Day in its modern form was established in 1948 and has been celebrated annually since then. In 2000, it was moved to the second Monday in January as part of the "Happy Mondays" reform, which allowed for long weekends.
Symbolism and meaning
Reaching 20 years in Japan is considered an important stage in a person's life. It is from this age that young people gain the right to vote, drink alcohol, smoke, and marry without parental consent. The holiday emphasizes the responsibility that comes with the rights of an adult.
Holiday Traditions
Formal Ceremonies. On Coming of Age Day, official ceremonies are held throughout Japan, organized by local municipalities. Young people are congratulated on their new status, given instructions, and expressed hopes for their active participation in society.
Kimono for Girls. Girls who have reached adulthood usually wear beautiful furisode - long, colorful kimonos with wide sleeves that symbolize their youth and unmarried status. This traditional, elegant kimono is worn only on special occasions, such as Coming of Age Day.
Costumes for Young Men. Young men often choose formal suits, although some prefer the traditional men's kimono - hakama. The choice of attire depends on the family and region.
Photos and formal dinners. Young people and their families take memorable photographs in traditional clothing. After the ceremonies, family dinners or parties with friends are often held to celebrate this important moment.
