Greenery Day (Midori no Hi) is a national holiday in Japan celebrated on May 4. It is dedicated to nature, plants and the environment. The name of the holiday comes from the Japanese word "midori" (green), symbolizing nature and life.

History of the holiday
The holiday was established in 1989 in memory of the former Emperor Showa (Hirohito), who ruled the country from 1926 to 1989. The emperor was known for his love of botany, nature and gardening. In his honor, Greenery Day was originally celebrated on April 29, his birthday.
After the reform, Greenery Day was moved to May 4.
