Historical significance
On May 25, 1963, leaders of 32 independent African states signed the Charter establishing the Organization of African Unity. The main goals of the OAU were:
* Promoting the unification of African countries
* Fighting against colonialism and apartheid
* Protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African states
In 2002, the OAU was transformed into the African Union (AU), which continues its mission.
How is Africa Day celebrated?
Today, Africa Day is celebrated not only on the continent but also by the African diaspora worldwide. Celebrations take many forms:
