Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated in Russia and a number of other countries on February 23. This holiday is dedicated to the military and veterans, as well as to all those who stood and stand in defense of their native country, and is considered a symbol of courage, honor and patriotism.

History of the holiday
Defender of the Fatherland Day traces its history back to 1918, when February 23 in Soviet Russia was celebrated as Red Army Day. At that time, the Red Army resisted the invasion of German troops, and this date became a symbol of the beginning of the defense of the young Soviet republic. Later, the holiday was renamed the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it became Defender of the Fatherland Day.

How Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated
Military parades and ceremonies. In various cities of Russia, solemn events are held to honor veterans and current military personnel.

Laying flowers at memorials. People lay flowers at monuments and memorials as a sign of respect for those who gave their lives for their homeland.

Congratulations to men. In modern Russia, Defender of the Fatherland Day has become a day when not only military personnel are congratulated, but also all men, believing that every man is a potential defender.
