World Seagrass Day is celebrated annually on March 1. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of seagrass for ocean ecosystems and its role in combating climate change.

History of Establishment
On May 27, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating March 1 as World Seagrass Day. This decision highlights the need to protect and restore seagrass ecosystems, which play a key role in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Importance of Seagrass
Seagrass performs several important functions:
- Carbon sequestration: it effectively absorbs carbon dioxide, helping to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
- Habitat provision: it serves as a home for many marine species, including fish, mollusks, and invertebrates.
- Coastal protection: it helps prevent shoreline erosion by stabilizing the seabed.

However, over the past century, seagrass areas have significantly declined, and the rate of this decline has accelerated since the 1990s. About 7% of these ecosystems are lost annually, putting many dependent species at risk.

Activities for World Seagrass Day
On this day, various events are held to inform the public about the importance of seagrass and the need for its conservation. Organizations, educational institutions, and non-governmental groups conduct seminars, coastal cleanup initiatives, and educational programs aimed at protecting these valuable ecosystems.
