UN English Language Day

English Language Day at the United Nations is celebrated annually on 23 April. The day was established to highlight the importance of English as one of the six official languages of the United Nations and to celebrate the cultural and lexical diversity that English brings to international relations.

April 23 was chosen because it is the birthday and death day of the famous English writer William Shakespeare (1564–1616), who is considered one of the greatest writers in the English language.
