International Francophonie Day

International Francophonie Day is celebrated annually on March 20 and is a holiday dedicated to the French language and the cultural diversity of French-speaking countries. This day is organized by the International Organization of la Francophonie, which unites more than 88 countries and regions where French is spoken or which have cultural ties with the Francophonie.

History of the holiday
International Francophonie Day was established in 1988 and is dedicated to the anniversary of the creation of the Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation, the predecessor of the OIF, on March 20, 1970. This agency was the first international organization to unite French-speaking countries for cultural, scientific and technical cooperation.

How is International Francophonie Day celebrated
Cultural events. On this day, numerous cultural events are held, such as concerts, theater performances, exhibitions and film screenings that demonstrate the richness of French-speaking culture.

Literary competitions. Many countries organize competitions for the best work in French, literary readings, and meetings with authors.

Educational programs. Schools, universities, and language centers hold lectures, seminars, and quizzes on the French language and the history of Francophonie.

Diplomatic and social events. Embassies and cultural centers of French-speaking countries host receptions and meetings aimed at promoting the French language and culture, as well as developing international relations.
