History
* Latvia’s independence was proclaimed on 18 November 1918 by the People’s Council of Latvia.
* The declaration was made in the building of the Latvian National Theatre in Riga.
* After the proclamation, a Provisional Government was formed, headed by Kārlis Ulmanis.
* Latvia officially received international recognition later: it was recognized de jure in 1921.
* During the Soviet occupation, Latvia’s independence was lost, but the idea of Latvian statehood persisted in exile.
Traditions and ways of celebration
* Ceremonial events take place across the country: concerts, official speeches, festive activities.
* In Riga, the National Armed Forces parade is held, often on the 11 November Embankment.
* Flower-laying ceremonies at the Freedom Monument in Riga with the participation of top officials.
* Torchlight processions are popular: they have a long history and lead from the monument of the first Prime Minister Kārlis Ulmanis to the Freedom Monument.
* Since 2009, a tradition has existed whereby people around the world simultaneously sing the Latvian national anthem “Dievs, svētī Latviju!” at 21:00 Latvian time.
* In the evening, fireworks and festive concerts are often held.
