On May 1, 1920, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly of Latvia (Latvian: Satversmes sapulce) took place, which was elected in the first democratic elections in the history of the country. This event marked the beginning of the formation of the democratic state structure in the Republic of Latvia.

The Constituent Assembly played a key role in the development and approval of the Constitution of Latvia (Satversme), which is still in effect today with certain amendments.

May 1 is an official public holiday in Latvia, as it also marks International Workers' Day. Therefore, the Day of the Constituent Assembly coincides with another national holiday and is celebrated concurrently.
