The Day of American Evacuation in Libya is observed annually on June 11. This holiday commemorates the withdrawal of American troops from Wheelus Air Base in Tripoli on June 11, 1970. The event symbolizes the end of foreign military presence in Libya and the strengthening of the country's national sovereignty.

Preconditions for the evacuation
After World War II, Libya came under the control of the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1951, Libya declared its independence, but foreign military bases, including the American Wheelus Air Base, continued to operate in the country.

In 1969, Muammar Gaddafi came to power as a result of a coup. The new regime opposed the foreign military presence and demanded the withdrawal of all foreign troops. After long negotiations, the United States agreed to transfer Wheelus Air Base to Libya, which occurred on June 11, 1970.

Significance of the holiday
The Day of American Evacuation symbolizes:

* The end of foreign military presence in Libya
* The strengthening of national sovereignty and independence
* The transition to a new era in the country’s history under Gaddafi

This day is celebrated in Libya as a milestone in the country’s history, emphasizing the people's aspiration for independence and self-determination.
