Origins of the festival
The name Hiderlez comes from the combination of the names of two Muslim saints:
Khızır (Khidr) - the protector of travelers and the giver of life.
Ilyas - a prophet, patron of water and fertility.
The festival has pre-Christian and pre-Islamic roots associated with the cult of nature, the revival of the earth and the change of seasons. It was later adapted by various religions, including Islam and Christianity.
Traditions of the festival
Making fires. Jump over fire to cleanse oneself of misfortunes.
Decorating trees. Ribbons or notes with wishes are hung on the branches.
Bathing in rivers and springs. It is believed that water on this day has a special cleansing power.
Festive dishes. Lamb dishes are prepared (for example, pilaf), since it is believed that the sacrifice of a sheep will bring prosperity. Special breads are baked.
Fortune-telling and wishes. People write down their dreams and leave them overnight under rose bushes so that Khizir and Ilyas will fulfill them. Girls and women tell fortunes about luck, health and marriage.
Songs and dances. Mass festivities are organized, accompanied by dancing, music and folk games.
