Labour Day
May 1, Wednesday
Labor Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated on May 1st and is a holiday dedicated to workers and their rights. The day has become a symbol of the struggle for better working conditions, higher wages, and protection of workers' rights around the world.Historical Context
Labor Day emerged in the late 19th century, when workers began to organize to fight for their rights. In particular, the movement for an eight-hour workday became the main slogan of workers in the United States and other countries. In 1886, mass strikes took place in Chicago, during which workers demanded shorter working hours. These events culminated in the Haymarket Riot, which became a symbol of the struggle for workers' rights. In 1889, at the International Socialist Congress in Paris, May 1st was proposed as a day of workers' solidarity.
