World Blood Donor Day
June 14, Friday
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14 and is dedicated to the importance of blood donation and to recognizing the people who voluntarily give their blood to save lives. The day was established by the World Health Organization in 2004 and was chosen to honor the birthday of Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner, who won the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his discovery of blood groups. Objectives of World Blood Donor Day
Raising awareness of the importance of blood donation. The main objective of this day is to emphasize the need for a safe and stable blood supply to save lives in critical situations such as surgery, childbirth, treatment of serious illnesses or injuries.
Appreciation of donors. World Blood Donor Day is a day when societies and organizations express their gratitude to blood donors for their voluntary and unpaid help. Blood donation saves millions of lives every year.
Attracting new donors. The holiday also serves as a platform to inspire new people to donate blood voluntarily, especially in countries where blood supplies remain critically low.
Ensuring blood safety. Another important goal of this day is to promote safety standards for blood donation and transfusion, as well as improve the infrastructure for its storage and distribution.
How is World Blood Donor Day celebrated
Public events and campaigns. On this day, blood collection events, educational campaigns, flash mobs and events in support of donation are held. Hospitals, donor centers and medical organizations conduct informational events aimed at attracting new donors and talking about the importance of safe donation.
Social networks and media campaigns. Health organizations use social networks and media to promote blood donation, share stories of people whose lives were saved by donor blood and encourage the public to join this movement.
