World Rivers Day is an international environmental holiday celebrated annually on the last Sunday of September. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the protection of rivers, reservoirs and freshwater ecosystems, as well as the importance of sustainable use of water resources.

History and goals of the holiday
World Rivers Day was established on the initiative of ecologist Mark Angelo from Canada in 2005. Its main idea was to draw the attention of the world community to the state of rivers, emphasize their role in ecosystems and human social life, and promote actions to protect and restore water bodies.

Problems associated with the state of rivers
Pollution. One of the main threats to rivers is pollution by industrial and domestic waste, as well as the irrational use of chemicals in agriculture. This leads to deterioration of water quality and the death of aquatic flora and fauna.
Change in river beds. The construction of dams and reservoirs, as well as the drainage of water bodies, change the natural river beds, which negatively affects ecosystems and the people who depend on the rivers.
Overconsumption of water. Increased water withdrawal for agriculture, industry and cities leads to shallowing of rivers and a decrease in their ability to support life in water bodies.

Events and campaigns
As part of World Rivers Day, various events are organized around the world aimed at:

Cleaning rivers and their banks. Volunteers gather to clean up garbage and other pollutants in water bodies.
Educational programs. Lectures, seminars and information campaigns are held to raise awareness of the importance of preserving rivers and aquatic ecosystems.
Cultural events. Festivals, exhibitions and concerts dedicated to the beauty of rivers and their role in people's lives.
Campaigns to restore aquatic ecosystems. Include planting plants along river banks and restoring the natural flow of rivers.
