The International Snow Leopard Day is celebrated annually on October 23. This day was established to draw attention to the conservation of one of the rarest and most beautiful wild animals on the planet — the snow leopard, or irbis.

History of the holiday
The holiday was established in 2013 at the initiative of the countries where the snow leopard lives. In October of that year, the International Forum on Snow Leopard Conservation was held in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), where representatives of 12 countries signed the “Bishkek Declaration” and adopted the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Program.

Purpose of the holiday
The main goal of the International Snow Leopard Day is to draw public attention to the need to protect the fragile mountain ecosystems where these rare cats live and to combat poaching, illegal fur trade, and the destruction of their habitats.

Where the snow leopard lives
The snow leopard inhabits the mountainous regions of Central Asia. It can be found in such countries as:

* Kyrgyzstan
* Kazakhstan
* Tajikistan
* Russia
* Mongolia
* China
* India
* Nepal
* Bhutan
* Afghanistan
* Pakistan

Interesting facts

* The snow leopard is called the “ghost of the mountains” because of its secretive lifestyle.
* These animals are perfectly adapted to the cold thanks to their thick fur and long tail, which helps them retain heat.
* According to experts, only about 4,000–6,500 snow leopards remain in the wild.

Significance of the holiday
The International Snow Leopard Day reminds people of the importance of protecting nature and the need for united efforts to safeguard this magnificent predator. Thanks to international programs and the participation of environmental organizations, the number of snow leopards is gradually stabilizing, but they still remain vulnerable.
