Tamil New Year, also known as Puthandu or Varudhapirudu, is celebrated annually on April 14 (sometimes April 13 depending on astronomical calculations). This festival marks the beginning of a new year in the Tamil calendar and coincides with the Sun's entry into the sign of Aries (Mesha).

History and Significance
Astronomical and Agricultural Significance. Puthandu marks the spring equinox and symbolizes the beginning of a new cycle in nature. It is the time of harvest and preparation for the new agricultural year.

Mythological Roots. According to Tamil tradition, it is on this day that the creator god Brahma is believed to have begun the process of creating the world. Therefore, the festival is associated with the beginning of a new era and renewal.

Cultural Significance. New Year has great significance in Tamil culture. It is a time to forgive grudges, renew family ties, and express gratitude for the past year.

How Tamil New Year is Celebrated
Home Decorations. Before the festival, houses are carefully cleaned and decorated. Kolam, traditional designs made from rice flour, are painted at the entrance to symbolize good luck and prosperity.

Preparing festive food. The main dish of the festival is manga pachadi, a mixture of mango, neem leaves, tamarind and sugar. This dessert combines sweet, sour and bitter tastes, symbolizing different aspects of life.

Prayers and visiting temples. In the morning, families gather to perform puja (ritual prayer) before images of gods. Many people visit temples to receive blessings for the coming year. Temples dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are especially popular.

Giving gifts and new clothes. An important part of the festival is the exchange of gifts between family members. People wear new clothes, which symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in life.

Family dinners. After the morning rituals, families gather for a festive lunch, where traditional dishes including rice, curry and sweets are served.

Astrological Predictions: On this day, many people read or listen to panchangam, an astrological prediction for the year that helps people navigate the upcoming events.

Tamil New Year Outside India
Puthandu is celebrated not only in Tamil Nadu, but also among Tamil communities around the world: in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, as well as in countries with a Tamil diaspora, such as the United States, Canada and Australia.
