Victory Day in the Maldives is celebrated annually on November 3rd to commemorate the thwarting of a coup attempt in 1988. It is a significant national holiday, symbolizing the triumph of the Maldivian government and its people over a major threat to the country's sovereignty.
On November 3, 1988, a group of mercenaries from the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), based in Sri Lanka, attempted to overthrow the government of the Maldives. The attackers managed to take control of parts of the capital, Malé, with the aim of assassinating President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
