Malawi Martyrs’ Day is a national holiday observed annually on March 3rd in Malawi. This day is dedicated to remembering those who fought for the country's independence from British colonial rule. It serves as an important symbol of national awareness and unity among the Malawian people.

Historical Background
In the first half of the 20th century, the territory of present-day Malawi was known as Nyasaland and was under British control. During the 1950s and 1960s, independence movements gained momentum due to growing dissatisfaction with colonial rule and political restrictions.

On March 3, 1959, British authorities declared a state of emergency and began mass arrests of activists, including leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress. Many protesters were killed or severely persecuted. These events marked a turning point in the struggle for independence, which was finally achieved on July 6, 1964.
