Mexico's Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th each year. It commemorates the start of the Mexican War of Independence from Spanish rule, which began in 1810. The day is marked by a reenactment of the "Grito de Dolores," a call to arms made by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who urged the Mexican people to rise up against colonial oppression.
