Every year on May 23, Mexico celebrates Student Day (Día del Estudiante), dedicated to the memory of the student movement of 1929, which played a key role in securing autonomy for the National University of Mexico, now known as the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

History of the holiday
In May 1929, students of the National University of Mexico organized a strike demanding university autonomy and academic freedom. On May 23, clashes occurred between students and the police, resulting in several students being injured. This date became a symbol of the struggle for academic freedoms and was officially recognized as Student Day.

How it is celebrated
On this day, various events are held at educational institutions across Mexico:

* ceremonial meetings and lectures dedicated to the history of the student movement;
* cultural and sports activities for students;
* in some cases, educational institutions grant students a day off.

Student Day in Mexico serves as a reminder of the importance of student participation in public life and the defense of the right to education and academic freedom.
