Sarawak Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 22. This holiday commemorates the anniversary of Sarawak gaining self-governance in 1963, a few months before the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.

History
Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo, was under British colonial rule since the late 19th century. However, in the mid-20th century, efforts for independence led to Sarawak achieving self-governance on July 22, 1963. On this day, the last British administration transferred power to local leaders, including Sarawak’s first Chief Minister, Stephen Kalong Ningkan.

Two months later, on September 16, 1963, Sarawak, together with Sabah (formerly known as North Borneo), Singapore, and Peninsular Malaysia, formed the Federation of Malaysia. While Sarawak remains part of the federation, Sarawak Independence Day continues to be a significant date, symbolizing the region's unique identity and historical importance.

How it is Celebrated
Parades and official ceremonies. Cities across Sarawak host parades, flag-raising events, and speeches by local leaders.
Cultural events. Traditional dances, music, and other activities showcase the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak's indigenous peoples, including the Dayak, Iban, Bidayuh, and others.
Education. Schools and universities hold lectures and exhibitions to help younger generations learn more about the significance of this day.

Significance for Residents
For Sarawakians, this day symbolizes their right to self-governance, a unique identity, and a rich cultural heritage that they strive to preserve and pass on to future generations.
