The International Day of Domestic Work (also known as the International Day for the Recognition of Domestic Work) is a day dedicated to acknowledging the importance of domestic labor — the kind of work performed daily by millions of people around the world, mostly women. This includes cleaning, childcare, caring for the elderly, cooking, and household maintenance — work that is often invisible and unpaid.

When is it celebrated?
The holiday is observed every year on July 22. It originated in 1983 at the Second Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encounter in Lima, Peru, as part of feminist movements in the region.

The purpose of the holiday
The main goal is to recognize domestic work as a significant economic and social contribution that:

ensures the functioning of families and society

supports the life and well-being of others

often remains unpaid, without status or recognition

is mostly done by women, which deepens gender inequality

How is the day observed?
In different countries, people organize:

awareness campaigns about the value of domestic work

public discussions, forums, and lectures

demonstrations or rallies to support domestic workers’ rights

online campaigns with hashtags like #DomesticWorkMatters

In some places, the day also raises awareness of the rights of hired domestic workers (such as nannies, cleaners, and caregivers), who often work without legal protections.

Why is it important?
The holiday aims to change public perception of domestic work:

it should be recognized as real labor

it needs to be included in economic and statistical indicators

domestic workers deserve legal protections and labor rights

Interesting facts
According to the ILO (International Labour Organization), over 75% of all domestic work worldwide is done by women

In many countries, domestic workers lack access to health insurance, pensions, or paid leave

Some governments are discussing basic income or tax benefits to recognize this work
