History of the holiday
This holiday is associated with the apparition of the Virgin Mary, which occurred on May 8, 1980, in the small town of Cuapa. Bernardo Martinez, a local peasant and catechist, witnessed the event. He claimed that the Virgin Mary appeared to him and conveyed an important message:
- A call to prayer, especially the Rosary.
- Instructions on the need for peace and love among people.
- The importance of reconciliation in the context of the civil war that was tearing Nicaragua apart at the time.
Bernardo later became a priest, and the site of the apparition became an important pilgrimage site.
How is the Day of the Virgin of Kuapa celebrated
Pilgrimage to Kuapa. Every year on May 8, thousands of believers travel to Kuapa to visit the site of the apparition of the Virgin Mary. Pilgrims participate in services, pray, and light candles.
Liturgies and processions. On this day, Catholic churches in Nicaragua hold special masses and processions with the icon of the Virgin of Kuapa. People pray for peace, health, and prosperity.
Rosary. The Rosary plays a central role in the celebration. Believers gather in families and communities to recite this prayer together.
Cultural events. In some regions, folklore performances and concerts are held, where traditional music and dances dedicated to the Virgin of Kuapa are performed.
