The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is celebrated annually on November 2, immediately after All Saints’ Day. This day is also known as All Souls’ Day or the Day of Remembrance of the Dead.

History of the holiday
The holiday was established in the 11th century by Odilo, abbot of the Cluny monastery in France. In 998, he proposed that on November 2 each year, prayers should be said for all deceased Christians who are in purgatory, awaiting purification before entering heaven. This tradition quickly spread throughout Catholic Europe and was officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.
Over time, the custom of commemorating the dead took root in other Christian traditions, although the date and forms of observance may vary.

Meaning of the holiday
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is dedicated to prayers and remembrance for the souls of the dead. The Church calls on believers to remember their loved ones, pray for their repose, and show spiritual mercy. This day symbolizes faith in eternal life, hope for resurrection, and the spiritual bond between the living and the departed.

How it is celebrated
In many countries, Catholics visit cemeteries, clean graves, and decorate them with flowers and candles.
Among the common traditions of the holiday are:

* attending Masses and requiem services;
* lighting candles in memory of the deceased;
* reading the names of departed relatives and praying for them;
* giving alms to the poor in memory of the souls of the dead;
* holding family gatherings and prayers at home.

Interesting facts

* In some countries, such as Mexico, this day coincides with the colorful Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), where prayers are combined with folk traditions.
* In Poland and other Eastern European countries, believers visit cemeteries, creating a sea of light from burning candles.
* In Italy, it is customary to leave food and wine overnight for the souls of deceased relatives.

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is a time of silence, remembrance, and prayer, when the living remember the dead with love and hope for an eternal reunion.
