Operation Market Garden
September 17, Wednesday

History of the operation
Operation Market Garden was an ambitious plan developed by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. The goal of the operation was to capture strategically important bridges across rivers in the Netherlands and Germany to secure a rapid route for the advance into Germany and end the war before Christmas 1944. The operation consisted of two parts: the airborne assault ("Market") and the ground advance ("Garden").
However, the operation was not successful. Despite being the largest airborne operation in history, the Allies failed to capture the key bridge at Arnhem, resulting in heavy losses and a strategic defeat. The operation demonstrated the importance of accurate reconnaissance and coordination among different branches of the military.
Significance of the commemorative date
September 17 reminds people of the sacrifices and heroism shown during Operation Market Garden. Although this date is not an official holiday, it is widely observed in the Netherlands through memorial ceremonies and events dedicated to the memory of the fallen and veterans.
