This is an annual event when the laureates of the Nobel Prize are officially awarded medals, diplomas, and monetary prizes. The ceremonial events take place in two cities: the awards in science, literature, and economics are presented in Stockholm (Sweden), while the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo (Norway).

When it is celebrated
The Nobel Prize Award Ceremony traditionally takes place on December 10 — the day of the death of the founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel. The first ceremony was held on December 10, 1901.

How the ceremony takes place

* The selected laureates receive a medal and a diploma on behalf of the official institutions.
* After receiving the award, the laureates (or one of them) deliver the Nobel Lecture, in which they present their views, the results of their work, and especially — in the case of the Peace Prize — their message to humanity.
* In Sweden, the award ceremony is complemented by a formal banquet — an official reception attended by laureates, members of royal families, officials, members of academies, and representatives of the authorities.
* In Norway (for the Peace Prize), the ceremony takes place in the Oslo City Hall — with the participation of the royal family, government officials, diplomats, invited guests, and with a speech by the laureate.

Why December 10 is a particularly significant date
This is the day when Alfred Nobel died. In his will, he ordered his fortune to be used to establish the prizes, which should be awarded annually to “those who have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” Thus, December 10 became a symbolic day of the revival of his ideas — through the recognition of outstanding contributions to science, literature, and peace.

What this holiday gives to the world and society

* It emphasizes the value of science, knowledge, peace, and humanism, highlighting people whose discoveries, ideas, or actions have brought global benefit.
* It serves as inspiration: laureates often become role models for new generations of scientists, writers, and activists.
* It reminds us of the importance of ideals — the pursuit of progress, justice, cooperation, and peace among people and nations.
