May 17, Saturday
Constitution Day in Norway is celebrated on May 17 and is one of the most important national holidays in Norway. It is the day when the country celebrates the adoption of its first Constitution, which was signed in 1814.How is Constitution Day in Norway celebrated?
Parading. One of the most colourful and well-known aspects of the holiday is the parade in the capital Oslo. Thousands of people, including children, schoolchildren, parents and military personnel, take part in colourful processions through the main streets of the city. Parade participants often wear traditional Norwegian clothing, including bullöng (national costumes), which adds a special atmosphere to the holiday. Other cities and towns in Norway also have their own local parades.
School events. On this day, schools organise ceremonial morning assemblies where children and schoolchildren sing national anthems, perform patriotic songs and teach each other about the importance of the Constitution. Schools often hold lessons on the history of the Constitution and the meaning of democracy in Norway.
Public celebrations. In Oslo, official ceremonies are held with the participation of the royal family. The king and members of the royal family usually appear on the balcony of the royal palace to greet the people and participate in celebrations that demonstrate the importance of the day for the entire country. In other cities, official events may also be organized, attended by dignitaries, including politicians and local government officials.
Traditional treats. Constitution Day is often accompanied by large meals and treats, such as hot dogs, cream pies, and various types of traditional Norwegian sweets. Families often have picnics and get-togethers, celebrating not only the historical event, but also the shared joy of civil freedom and independence.
