The Battle of Callao Memorial Day is celebrated annually on May 2 in Peru. This day is dedicated to the memory of the heroic defense of the port of Callao from the attack of the Spanish fleet in 1866. The battle became a key episode in the history of the struggle of the countries of South America for independence from the colonial rule of Spain.

Historical background
After the declaration of independence of most countries of Latin America, Spain tried to restore its influence in the region. In 1865-1866, the Peruvian-Spanish War began, provoked by territorial disputes and the desire of Spain to regain control over its former colonies.

The Spanish fleet attacked the port of Callao, which was a strategically important object for Peru.
Peruvian troops and volunteers put up fierce resistance. Under the leadership of the then President of Peru, Mariano Ignacio Prado, they managed to organize a defense.
Despite the numerical superiority of the Spanish fleet, the defenders of Callao repelled the attack, inflicting significant losses on the Spanish.
