Historical Significance
The city of Lima was founded on January 18, 1535, by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. The official name of the city at its founding was "Ciudad de los Reyes" (City of the Kings), as Pizarro founded it in honor of the Three Wise Men (Magi), whose celebration falls in January. However, the city soon became better known as Lima, after the local settlement that was on this site before the arrival of the Spanish.
Modern Celebrations
Lima Foundation Day is celebrated on a grand scale, including various cultural, religious and social events.
Ceremonies. The main events take place in the center of Lima, in the historic Plaza de Armas (Square of Arms), where the Lima Cathedral and the government palace are located. Official ceremonies, speeches by authorities and the raising of the flag take place here.
Cultural events. On this day, the city hosts concerts, theater performances, art exhibitions and street parades dedicated to Lima's rich cultural heritage. Traditional Peruvian dances and music are often seen, including the famous Peruvian dance Marinera and Spanish folkloric dances.
Festive processions. One of the central events of the holiday is a grand parade through the streets of Lima, which includes colorful costumed processions, performances by musicians and artists.
Religious events. In Lima, as in many other parts of Peru, the Christian religion plays an important role in public life. Therefore, Lima Foundation Day is accompanied by religious ceremonies, especially in the city's Cathedral, where masses and special services are held in honor of the city's patron saint.
