Initially, July 4 was celebrated as Philippine Independence Day. However, in 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal moved the Independence Day celebration to June 12 to honor the proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. July 4 was preserved as Philippine-American Friendship Day.
