This holiday was established in 1955 by Philippine President Ramón Magsaysay to honor the partnership and alliance between the Philippines and the United States. The date was not chosen randomly, as on July 4, 1946, the Philippines gained independence from the United States.

Initially, July 4 was celebrated as Philippine Independence Day. However, in 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal moved the Independence Day celebration to June 12 to honor the proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. July 4 was preserved as Philippine-American Friendship Day.
