Anniversary of the EDSA Revolution
February 25, Sunday
The EDSA People Power Revolution (EDSA People Power Revolution) is observed in the Philippines every February 25. The holiday commemorates the peaceful revolution of 1986 that ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos and restored democracy to the Philippines. The EDSA Revolution came after more than two decades of authoritarian rule by President Ferdinand Marcos, who was plagued by human rights abuses, political repression, corruption, and economic hardship. Tensions had been rising, and the situation escalated with the assassination of prominent opposition figure Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino in 1983, which marked a turning point for Filipinos.
Celebration Traditions
The EDSA Revolution anniversary is observed as a day of remembrance and gratitude for the restoration of democracy:
Ceremonies. Festive events are held at Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, where the revolution was organized. Rallies, flower-laying ceremonies, and speeches by politicians and public figures are held here.
Historical Exhibitions: Exhibitions and lectures are held on the day to commemorate the revolution and its heroes. Schools and universities organize special classes to teach about the events and the significance of the EDSA Revolution to Philippine democracy.
Prayers and Services: Since many of the revolutionaries drew strength from their faith, religious services and prayers for peace and democracy are also held to commemorate the anniversary of EDSA.
Educational Programs: Schools organize lectures and events to help youth learn about the significance of the revolution and its lessons.
