The date of April 7 was chosen in connection with the tragic events that took place on board the submarine K-278 Komsomolets.
On April 7, 1989, the nuclear submarine Komsomolets sank in the Norwegian Sea as a result of a fire. Of the 69 crew members, 42 died.
This disaster became one of the largest tragedies in the history of the submarine fleet of the USSR and Russia. Despite the crew's attempts to fight for the survivability of the vessel and rescue their comrades, most of the sailors died.
How it is celebrated
Laying of wreaths and flowers. Wreaths and flowers are laid at memorials and cemeteries where submariners are buried as a sign of respect and grief.
Ceremonial events. Memorial rallies are held, attended by relatives of the deceased, veterans and active military personnel.
Minutes of silence and prayers. Churches and cathedrals hold services in memory of the deceased, as well as minutes of silence at official events.
Memories and documentaries. Documentaries dedicated to the heroism of submariners and tragic events are shown on television and in cinemas.
