The date of April 13 was not chosen by chance: it is associated with the birthday of Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (c. 70-8 BC), an ancient Roman politician and patron of the arts, whose name has become a household word for people who support culture and creativity.
In Russia, the tradition of patronage has deep roots. In the 19th century, large entrepreneurs and noblemen such as Savva Morozov, Pavel Tretyakov, the Mamontovs, and Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck actively supported art, created museums, theaters, and charitable institutions. Their contribution to the development of Russian culture and the social sphere is enormous.
How the holiday is celebrated
